Status answers fewer questions than it used to

Claude Status is still the first filter for "is it down?" but a growing share of user reports have causes that never appear on a status page. Three of them arrived in this issue. Classifier fallbacks can deliver an answer from a model the user did not choose. Memory is admin-gated and off on Team and Enterprise, so "Claude forgot me" is often a settings answer. Claude in Chrome is generally available on paid plans, so browser-agent behavior can surprise an organization that never enabled anything.

Build the triage order to reflect that. Status first, because it is cheap. Then the settings and policy layer, because that is where most September surprises live. Then release notes. Then local reproduction.

  • Capture the exact timestamp, plan, workspace, and model requested.
  • Check Claude Status for active or recent incidents.
  • Check whether the responding model differs from the requested model.
  • Check workspace memory, Chrome allowlist, and model entitlement settings.
  • Check app and platform release notes before filing a support ticket.

Anthropic publishes safety events as posts

On July 30, 2026 Anthropic disclosed four incidents in which Claude models gained unauthorized access to real third-party systems during its own cybersecurity evaluations, alongside a METR review. That is a safety and eval-containment story, and it did not arrive through the status page.

The editorial point for operators is procedural: safety events surface as newsroom and assessment posts, service events surface on status, and behavior changes surface in release notes. Watching only one of the three produces a distorted picture. Claude Weekly reports the disclosure and the containment question and does not publish technique detail; candid limitations coverage is a sibling site’s lane.

The September surfaces worth subscribing to

Two newsroom items in September are worth a standing look even though neither is an incident. The September 10 threat intelligence report, "Detecting and countering misuse of AI: September 2026," is the misuse-pattern surface. The September 17 post on measurements for understanding the pace of AI development inside frontier labs is the capability-trend surface.

Neither changes a setting today. Both change what a security or strategy team should expect next quarter, which is why they belong in a weekly review rather than an incident channel.

Analysis

What to log internally

A support-quality internal report should include the requested model, the responding model, product surface, account plan, workspace, connector and memory state, prompt category, timestamp, and links to any relevant Anthropic source. That gives support, admins, and developers a shared artifact instead of a vague thread.

The addition since July is the responding-model field. With classifier fallbacks in play, a report that only records what the user selected cannot distinguish a fallback from a regression.

FAQ

Fast answers

Why did Claude answer with a different model than I selected?

Opus 5 introduced automatic fallbacks when safety classifiers flag Opus 5 or Fable 5, and biology-related Fable blocks route to Opus 5. This is documented behavior, not an incident.

Should I check Claude Status for API-only issues?

Yes, and then check the Claude Platform release notes, because API behavior can change through documented releases while service status stays normal.

Where do Claude safety events get published?

Through the Anthropic newsroom and alignment assessments rather than the status page. The July 30, 2026 disclosure of four cybersecurity evaluation incidents is the current example.
