What changed

The operating picture

  1. Fable 5.1 is the generally available flagship

On September 1 Anthropic released Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1, calling Fable 5.1 its most capable generally available model. Base rates stayed $10 input / $50 output per million tokens; cache reads dropped to 2.5% of base input ($0.25). Mythos 5.1 is the same underlying model with more permissive safeguards, trusted access only, under Project Glasswing.

  2. Official start-here is still Opus 5

Anthropic’s choosing-a-model guidance is to start with Claude Opus 5 for most workloads, and to reach for Fable 5.1 when the work is demanding reasoning or long-horizon agentic, or when Opus 5 at higher effort still falls short. Sonnet 5 remains the speed/intelligence balance; Haiku 4.5 is fastest and cheapest. The generally available board is Fable 5.1, Opus 5, Sonnet 5, and Haiku 4.5.

  3. Sonnet 5 stayed at $2 / $10

The rate announced as introductory through August 31 did not rise to $3 / $15 on September 1. The pricing page now lists $2 input / $10 output per million tokens as the standard Sonnet 5 rate. That is a correction to every forecast that baked in the step-up.

  4. Claude in Chrome is generally available

Claude in Chrome is generally available on every paid Claude plan, with autonomous browser actions gated by a safety classifier and Enterprise admin domain allowlists. Anthropic’s post is undated; we file it late August / early September and do not invent a launch day.

  5. Memory is one system across chat and Cowork

Chat memory and Cowork memory are now the same memory, with topic-level edit and delete. Sensitive topics are off by default. It is on by default for Free, Pro, and Max; admin-gated and off for Team and Enterprise until a user enables it. The post is undated; we file it in early September.

  6. Future models watermark text

On August 14 Anthropic announced that future Claude models will watermark generated text for EU AI Act / Code of Practice purposes: no practical quality impact, no hidden characters, no extra tokens, not traceable to a person, organization, or conversation. This issue treats it as a news item. The plain answer lives at Claude Helps, not here.

Why it matters

The board moved as a set of defaults, not a single launch. Teams still quoting July — Opus 4.8 as current Opus, Fable 5 as flagship, Sonnet 5 intro pricing that expires — are working from a picture that is nine weeks stale.

The cost story is two non-events and one real cut. Sonnet 5 did not get more expensive. Opus 5 held the Opus 4.8 rate of $5 / $25. Fable 5.1 cache reads dropped from the usual 10% of base input to 2.5%, which is the change most likely to alter routing on long agent loops.

Two September defaults belong to admins, not developers: memory gating on Team and Enterprise, and Chrome domain allowlists. Consumer defaults do not apply to managed plans.
